Welcome to Greening Theatres, a resource for theatre professionals interested in tackling climate change
In September 2008, the Mayor of London launched a publication packed full of practical advice tailored to the theatre industry. The Green Theatre Plan marries sustainability with the arts, demonstrating how theatres can reduce their carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2025. A key objective of the Green Theatre Plan is a tangible reduction in the CO2 emissions of London theatres.
The plan is for anyone working in the theatre industry, from small independent production companies and arts venues, to large groups of commercial theatres. This plan aims to guide you through some of the most practical and effective ways to reduce your energy use and make London theatres greener - while also saving you money.
Alongside the guide we developed a Carbon Calculator for theatre productions which you can download and are welcome to use and share.
In 2010 Julie’s Bicycle, who have been involved with the Plan from its early days, took on the role of coordinating the London Green Theatre network and continuing to develop the resources, advice and guidance available to the theatre industry as it addresses the issue of environmental sustainability and prepares for a low carbon economy. You can find more information on the Julie’s Bicycle main website.
