Greater London Authority

The GLA is a strategic authority with a Londonwide role to design a better future for the capital.  The GLA supports the work of the Mayor of London who is in charge of setting the overall vision for the capital, helping his office to develop and deliver strategies and policies for London. It also supports the London Assembly in their role of scrutinising the work of the Mayor and representing the interests of Londoners.

The Mayor has a clear vision of London being recognised as a world leader in improving the environment locally and globally and has set out his overriding environmental strategy in Leading to a greener London (July 2009). This is supported by strategies focusing on air quality, water, waste, noise, biodiversity, climate change adaptation, climate change mitigation and energy.

The Mayor’s target is to reduce carbon emissions in London by 60% by 2025.
